Do you still upvote comments under your posts?

It's been almost two months since the arrival of the "catastrophic" HF21/22. Downvotes are flying everywhere, for better or worse. Certain whales stopped jerking themselves in the public. Profitable vote buying is now the prime target for large accounts such as @ocdb. At the same time, the call against "circlejerks" is a thing among the stakeholders. Well, I'm not here to discuss those.

When @vandeberg introduced the the convergent linear rewards curve, many content creators complained. You can read more about it here:

https://steempeak.com/steem/@vandeberg/reward-curve-deep-dive

This was the graph on the linked post

In summary, your rewards are not linear until it passes a certain rshares threshold. What is that number? I have no clue. I have read about people saying 20 STEEM, etc. but that calculation bases itself on current prices. Under the old rules pre-HF21, you could use tools such as Steemd to estimate how much your votes would worth. Now, it's a bit trickier. In fact, you would have to exert as much as twice the mana to place a $0.03 vote on a comment.

Regardless, that does not prevent people from rewarding meaningful interactions through comments. I, for one, still upvote readers who leave meaningful comments on my posts, dPolls included.

Other Steemians have powered up various SCOTs to reward their audience. Sometimes, I make up those rewards with my SCOT accounts. So, the whole reward element has become more complex due to all the features we have. Now, imagine when SMTs arrive. Where will things be when that happens?

Who do these changes affect? The ones seeking "maximum" returns. Some people may seek to vote popular content early in attempt to gain better curation. But, that would be unfruitful as competitors vote earlier and earlier. Voters would have to spread out, but risk getting less curation because the reward curve.

But if you are like others who don't obsess themselves with scrounging for STEEM, who cares? You keep creating those content and do your hobby. If Steem is a career for you, good for you.

Back to the main question:

Do you still upvote comments on your content? Why or why not?

No one will judge you if you answer no. At least, I won't.

  • Yes, I do it regardless.

  • No, it's not worth it

I don't have enough SP on this account to vote comments above the $0.02 dust threshold, so I usually don't vote comments.

Ah well, such is the way with the current prices.

Sure, it is the best way to say thanks. Ain't it?

I would think so, but not everyone agrees.

Curve factor does matter but not everything is about profit, so sometimes I do it because comments are worth it.

but not everything is about profit

And more specifically, short-term profit. We definitely need more people not obsessed with those rewards.

If the reply is substantive that is.

Everyone’s mileage may vary.

Depends on my VP, if I have plenty then I do.

That’s definitely a limiting factor.

Sometimes I do

What about other times?

Are you serious about not knowing the curve?

As dumb as it sounds, I think we would have a lot more genuine interactions if people didn't understand how to "maximize" their votes on the chain.

I think of it as politeness, something akin to thanking a friend for calling over.

Good on ya. I mean it.

Voted for

  • No, it's not worth it

What's the point? My votes will turn to dust.

That’s unfortunate.

Nowadays I rarely get real, human comments under my blog posts, so there is nothing to upvote in most cases, and even if I do receive real, human comments, I rarely upvoted comments even before the HardFork 21/22 (HF21/22), because my 100% upvote value usually worth less than $0.02, which is the payout threshold. Nowadays it is worth the half (or even less than the half) of it. So, upvoting comments under my blog posts is a waste of voting power, because the author of the comment (nor I) would not get nothing, unless other people also upvote the comments well enough to push the pending payout above the payout threshold ($0.02), but that is very rarely happens. If there would not be a payout threshold, then I would upvote comments under my blog posts.

That’s one thing many people complained about, the threshold.

I suppose it encourages more people to hold SP or multiple peeps to upvote good comments, but I don’t think it’s working.

I’m lucky I can still do it without using a full vote.

This is the correct answer!

Wow😁

I really don't understand the curve, but I like to show appreciation and hope it amounts to something. Votes matter, because people know they cost the voter something...that's what gives the vote value. So, by voting, I'm saying your comment is valuable to me.

And you are indeed correct.

That's the way to go for a lot of people now.

Dpoll just gives me a “forbidden” error. 😢 Generally, after HF2+ I haven’t been upvoting comments. I try to still respond and give some !BEER or something, but knowing that half of my VP will be wasted (value vanished into the ether) means it’s better to wait to upvote a post.

I suppose it’s a bit selfish, but I certainly didn’t come up with the EIP and I could have told you that lack of curating comments would be a consequence before it was implemented...the big players don’t care, means more author rewards for them.

$trendotoken

A lot of this is me trying to see if people carry on as usual, or being reward-driven.

People respond to incentives, just human nature. Selfish best interest is the driving force behind all markets...including one for content and rewards.

It's also a complicated system.

I have seen my share of people who have no idea what they are doing when it comes to their mana usage, etc. And a number of them have much greater SP than you or me.
